For a sample edit, I will ask you to submit a sample of your writing, around 10-20 pages, so that I can get a better idea of your writing style and make sure we are a good author/editor match. I will do a simple line edit at this stage.

My rate is $40 for a sample edit.

From wherever you are in your writing process, we can look at the big picture together. This stage of editing takes a broader approach, looking at what is working and what is not working at a larger scale. Generally, for fiction, we will look at the story as a whole, looking at the plot, character development, dialogue, themes, etc. For nonfiction, we will look more at the promise of the book, making sure that each chapter is in line with your goal, your voice as the author, and the flow of the book in general.

This process is tailored to the individual book and the author, and will generally be done in batches.

My rates are $45-70 per hour.

Once the book has been written, it is time to take a closer look at sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, basic fact-checking, and style.

Depending on where your writing is at, I will perform either a light, medium, or heavy copyedit. We will communicate back and forth and all changes will ultimately go through you. The book is yours, after alI, I am just helping polish it.

My rates for copyediting are $35-50, varying with nonfiction versus fiction.

After the book has been copyedited, it is time for layout. Using InDesign, I will flow your document, getting it ready for the proofs process. After that, I will provide you with 3 different sample layouts to choose from. Once we’ve agreed on the basics, I will get your book ready for print. If you have any changes from the proofs process I will enter them and you will have one final design pass before delivery of the final product.

My rates for layout are $45-60, varying on the amount of images and intensity of the design.

Once your book is written, proofreading focuses on readability. The proofreading process focuses on catching any mistakes that the copyeditor may have missed or that were entered during the layout stage.

My rates are $35-45 an hour for proofreading.

We will start with some discussion about where you are at and what you are looking for, and we will tailor what this role will look like for you personally.

Rate for coaching and/or consulting range from $50-70 per hour.
